iPod Touch Support to be Discontinued

Back in 2014 when Edge by Melinx was first created, the software was designed specifically for the Apple iPod Touch. Since then, time and technology have changed.

We chose the iPod Touch for several important reasons. An iPod Touch is essentially an iPhone without the cellular capability. Instead, it operates on the WiFi network to communicate through the Internet. Otherwise, it has almost all of the other features of an iPhone, including a high resolution camera. The iPod Touch has the advantage over an iPhone of being small, lightweight, easily gripped while handling packages and envelopes, and inexpensive (under $200), and yet the iPod Touch packs an impressive amount of computational power to allow it to be responsive with even very complex applications like Edge by Melinx.

In the last eight years, the cost of older iPhone models have dropped dramatically, making them cost competitive with the iPod Touch; and they have the cellular phone and data capability. Recently, Apple announced it will no longer be making iPod Touch units and will be using up their existing inventory.

Consequently, we will be transitioning Edge by Melinx (and Adamas Edge) away from the smaller screen format of the iPod Touch to the noticeably larger screen size found in the iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 6 and newer models.

We also will be raising the minimum operating system requirement for using a device with the Edge by Melinx App in order to take advantage of additional capability. Currently, we are developing software for Apple’s iOS 16, which is expected to be released this fall. Once that new operating system is available to Apple customers, we will begin requiring that all devices (phones and tablets) upgrade to iOS 16; older devices that cannot be upgraded will have to be replaced.
